Excursion Safety & Risk Management
Playful adventures — planned with care and professionalism.
At Flying Start Family Day Care, excursions are an exciting part of your child’s learning and connection with the community — and they’re always planned with care, precision and professionalism.
Every outing is supported by a clear risk assessment and supervision plan so that children can explore confidently while we keep safety at the forefront.
How we plan for safety and compliance
Every excursion is supported by documented planning and risk controls in line with the Education and Care Services National Law and Regulations, including:
- Regulation 100 – risk assessment prepared before an excursion
- Regulation 102 – parent/guardian authorisation for excursions
- Regulation 123 – educator-to-child ratios
How we prepare before every adventure
- A written, destination-specific risk assessment is prepared
- Hazards are identified (environment, transport, venue layout, weather)
- Control measures are documented (supervision, boundaries, transitions, hygiene)
- Individual health needs are reviewed (allergies, medical plans, medication)
- Emergency procedures and communication plans are confirmed
- Transport arrangements are confirmed (where applicable)
Risk assessments are reviewed regularly and updated when conditions or plans change.
How we watch, guide and support your child
We maintain supervision in accordance with Regulation 123.
- Active positioning supervision (not passive supervision)
- Routine head counts (especially during transitions)
- Clear group boundaries and expectations
- Focused supervision in higher-risk areas (car parks, public walkways, water features)
Children get the freedom to explore because the structure is already in place.
Safe travel and transport
- Approved vehicles are used
- Children travel in age-appropriate restraints in accordance with road safety requirements
- Vehicle safety documentation is maintained
- A mobile phone (or other communication device) is carried at all times
What you will receive and be asked to approve
Families are provided with excursion authorisation information before participation, including:
- Destination and purpose
- Dates / frequency (for regular outings)
- Supervision arrangements and ratios
- Transport arrangements (if applicable)
- Key hazards and controls
Written parent/guardian authorisation is obtained before children participate.
